The first great success of director Mariusz Treliński and stage designer Boris F. Kudlička at the Polish National Opera. The Warsaw production of "Madame Butterfly" caught the attention of the artistic director of the Washington Opera, the great tenor Placido Domingo, and was also staged in Washington as a co-production with the Teatr Wielki – Opera Narodowa. The Washington premiere took place in 2001, to great audience acclaim and excellent reviews in the American press. “Never in my long life have I seen such an excellent production of "Madame Butterfly". But it’s not just that. This is one of the most beautiful productions I have ever seen at the opera,” said Placido Domingo in an interview.

In 2004, the Easter Festival will be organized around the theme Beethoven and the Music of the Nations of Europe. This title relates the festival events to Poland’s entry into the European Union. The Festival programme is designed so as to show Beethoven’s works in various contexts and from different angles. The work of the “first liberated artist” meets the oeuvre of his contemporaries, with the works of Romantic, Modernist and 20th-century composers acting as a counterpoint. In this way Beethoven’s music becomes a source of inspiration to look for new references and reinterpretations in culture. Mrs. Elżbieta Penderecka, the Artistic Director of the Festival, has consistently followed the principle that a carefully selected programme of the concerts is interpreted by the best, internationally renowned artists.

Yayoi Kusama (born 1929) is the most outstanding female Japanese contemporary artist. As painter, sculptor, performer, author of installations, video films and novels. She has achieved world-wide recognition and acclaim on two occasions : the first in New York in the ’60s and the second in the ’90s, when at an already advanced age, she made a triumphant return to the world art scene in an extensive number of exhibitions, such as the exhibition ‘Love Forever: Yayoi Kusama 1958-1968’ in the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1998 demonstrating her influence on the American art of the ’60s.
The exhibition at Zachęta attempts to do no more than present a fraction of Kusama’s rich creative output. It will include a selection of her images, drawings collages and other works from all the major stages of the artist’s career.Within the frame of the exhibition we will also show a series of archive slides of Kusama called Walking Piece (1966), documenting a performance when the artist walked around the streets of New York in a kimono.
The works gathered for the exhibition come from the collections of the Kusama Studio and Ota Fine Arts, Tokyo; Les Abattoirs, Toulouse; Galerie Pičce Unique, Paris; Fonds National d'Art Contemporain, Puteaux and Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nancy; Walter&Fabien Gallery, Basel – Zürich; Le Consortium, Dijon; Sammlung Goetz, Monachium; Galerie Bleibtreu, Berlin as well as from a private collection in France

The art of glasswork can be extremely versatile. In the hands of renowned Scandinavian artists, this traditional material has entered new aesthetic dimensions. Glass sculptures, glass painting, glass objects, and glass tableware are only a few of the multiple artistic forms that glass can take.
It is impossible to imagine the world of Danish art without Per Hebsgaard, who has also earned an international reputation. Due to his vast knowledge, and in particular, to his unlimited desire to experiment with glass, he enjoys universal acclaim. Nothing seems to be impossible for him. A variety of fresh and original techniques have emerged out of his innovative spirit. The gtassworks created in his studio are more than merely applied art in the traditional sense. The Reflections in a New Nordic Light exhibition attempts to introduce the public to the multitude of embodiments and forms of Scandinavian glasswork. (Astrid la Cour) .
